Why is a bigha a different size in different states?
Because it was never standardised. The bigha predates metric survey and was fixed locally, usually against the length of a rod or a day's ploughing. When the states settled their revenue records they each kept the local value. That is why a UP bigha is more than three times a Himachal one.
What is the difference between a pucca and a kachha bigha?
In several north Indian states two bighas were in use — the larger “pucca” bigha of the revenue settlement, and a smaller local “kachha” bigha, often a third of it. Old records and older conversations may mean either. If a figure looks three times off, this is usually why.
